The warmest days were the 24th with a silly 15.1C being reached while 12C was breached on three other days. The warmest night was on the 21st with 8.5C being the low. Nights did turn cooler again from the 26th with night frosts. However a month certainly with a split personality. The month had one named storm Darcy which brought some snow and heavy rain on the 6th. The brought Winter to a close with just finishing close to average at 3.9c just -0.4C below average. Rainfall wise a very wet winter with 170.3% of the seasonal average Spring certainly arrived at times in March but didn't continue from February as the month started on a cold note with the weather on a chilly note from the 1st to the 8th. The coldest day was on the 3rd when 3.9C was the high. Air frost occurred on 3 days with the coldest nights on the 1st with -1C and again on the 7th. However despite this being the coldest spell of the month it didn't produce any snow. This was reserved for the 12th when heavy rain turned to wet snow briefly and the 26th to 27th when snow fell overnight and into the morning leaving a patchy cover. The weather from the 10th was generally on the mild to very and even warm side. From the 15th double figures were reached everyday bar 2 days. It was very warm from the 29th to the 31st as temperatures reached 17.6C, followed by 20.9C on the 30th and this was beaten by the 31st with a summery 23.3C being reached. Snow fell on the 4th, 6th and from the 9th to the 11th. May was another cold month and a very wet one indeed. Incomplete contrast to April with saw only 6.1mm a 129.1mm fell. The month started on a chilly note and never really got going until the end of the month when the 20's were reached for the first time since the end of March. The warmest days being 21.9C on the 29th, 20.5C on the 30th and the warmest day 22C on the 31st. The coldest days were the 3rd and 4th with 8.6C and 8.5C being the highs. The 1st got close to an air frost when 0.5C was the low. Temperatures got into double figures from the 5th but stayed mostly around the lower to middle teens until the end of the month. Sleet fell on the 4th, 6th and 7th which were the last wintry precipitation until November. The 3rd and the 4th were very wet days with 26.7mm falling on both these days. Despite being a wet month double figures only reached again on the 11th with 15.2mm falling. These three days producing more than 50% of the final value of 129.1mm of rain. The month was the 4th wettest on record. There were only three days without any measurable rainfall. Nine days had a trace condition. Question now would summer produce. The answer for June was yes. In a complete contrast to the previous month rainfall only 23.3mm of rain fell and 18 days didn't see any rainfall at all. The month sneaked into the top driest June's on record at number 10. Temperature wise the month was the 8th warmest on record. The weather was almost perfect summery weather right up to the 16th. The temperatures passed the 20 degree mark for 17 days on the bounce and were mostly in lower 20's. The 16th was the only hot unpleasant day of the month. The warmest night was on the 14th when 17C was the low. From the 18th temperatures were mostly in the mid to upper teens the coldest day being the 25th with only 13.1C being the high. The coldest night was on the 1st with only 7.9C. There weren't any Thunderstorms through the month and the month was a quiet benign month. Spring thus became a rare chilly season with it clocking in at -1.2C below average. The rainfall was slightly above average at 116% with a total of 204.5mm Summer continued into July with the 6th warmest on record. Rainfall just slightly above average. The month started with pleasant temperatures in the low to twenties and this continued until the 15th with only three days failing to break the 20C mark. The 1st and the 2nd recorded the lowest night temperatures at 8.9C and 9.9C. The real hot weather kicked off from the 16th with 27.1C being reached the 17th hit the 30.0C degree mark the hottest day of the month followed by 29.1C on the 18th. 29C+ were hit again on the 29th 29.3C and the 22nd 29.4C. A huge drop in temperatures saw 23rd record 19.9C nearly 10 degrees difference. The period from the 16th to the 22nd saw temperatures every day above 27C. Overnight the temperatures from the 18th stayed above 16C until he 23rd. The highest temperature was 17C on the 21st. A named storm on the 29th to 30th, Evert had zero impact was notable for being totally unnoticeable. The wettest period was from the 3rd to the 5th with 10.9mm,12.9mm and 11.4mm falling. Rainfall never reached double figures after these days and there were 13 days without any measurable rain from the 14th until the 26th. There weren't any Thunderstorms in July. After two warm summer months would August follow suit. It failed to do so coming average temperatures wise. It was also another dry month just failing to make the top ten driest. There wasn't any heat in regards to August with temperatures staying in the low twenties or upper teens through out the month. Indeed the warmest day was only 23C on the 4th while the coldest was 15.7C on the 27thand 31st. The coldest night was on the 3rd when 8.5C was the low otherwise double figures from the 5th until the end of the month. The wettest day was on the 8th with only 8.1mm falling the next highest was 6.6mm on the 22nd. Despite being a dry month rain fell on 26 days with only 5 days being totally dry. August did mean that 2021 saw the 7th warmest summer on record clocking in at 16.9C. While summer had a slight hiccup in August it forgot that it was Autumn in September and the heat returned. September clocked in at the 2nd warmest on record just failing to beat September 2006 by 0.2C. The month started as much like August however this changed from the 6th with mid to upper twenties being recorded. The warmest day was on the 8th with 28.9C being reached just clipping the previous day by 0.1C. Thankfully the hot unpleasant weather lasted only another day before pleasant conditions returned with temperatures generally in the low twenties. It did turn cool on the 14th with 14.5C being the high this being the 2nd coolest day. It did turn chilly during the last four days with 13.3C being the coldest day on the 29th. The last four days preventing the month from being a record breaker. The coldest nights occurred at the end of the month with 7C being the low on the 30th. The warmest night didn't occur during the hottest period but on the 120th with 16.1C being the low. September was heading for one of the driest on record when like the temperature record it was dashed in the last four days. Heavy rain fell on the 27th with 13.1mm and again on the 30th with 13.3mm. Three of the last four days produced 35.9mm taking it from 3rd driest on record to outside the top ten. Overall summer was a dry one and came in just above average at 0.9C October saw just above average rainfall and was a mild month overall. Temperatures generally stayed around the mid to lower teens with a high of 20.6C on the 8th and a low of 10.5C on the 21st. 9 days saw the nigh time temperate in double figures with 13C being the low on the 9th and 12.6C on the 8th. Night son the 28th and 29th were also very mild with 12.9C and and 12.5C being the low. The 21sta d 22nd did produce some chilly nights with 3.9C and 3.5C being the low. Most of the rain fell on 2 days at the start of the month 9.8mm and 15.2mm on the 2nd and 4th and the last four days of the month. The last four days producing 48.3mm towards the final total. the heaviest rain being 24.1mm on the 31st while the 28th produced 11.6mm. Only three days saw double figures. No rain measurable rain fell between the 6th and 11th and only 1.5mm between the 23rd and 27th. The last month of the Autumn was a dry month and a average month. It was also a month which saw the first snowfall since April which fell very rapidly and caused some bizarre problems. The was courtesy of storm Arwen. The month started quietly enough with temperatures above normal and they stayed this way until the 20th when temperatures dropped away with it cold briefly from the 27th to the 28th . The two day cold snap enough to stop November being a mild month. The warmest day was on the 9th with 14.1C being the high The 13th wasn't too far behind with 13.8C and neither were the 18th and 19th with 13.7C and 13.6C being registered. Night stayed in double figures twice with 10.1C being the low on the 10th and 19th. The month was a very dry month and going for the record books until Arwen appeared on the scene. During the night of the 26th and early hours 27th heavy rain, sleet and then snow produced 24.9mm of rain. The high winds forecast didn't arrive during the evening of the 26th the winds steadily picked up then suddenly died away for the early part of the night. Heavy rain died away as well until after midnight at three there was no snow on the ground rain arrived around three and by six in the morning there were 10cm of wet lying snow. The snow caused more issues sticking to the cups of analogue anemometer reducing the measured wind speed and stopping the digital anemometer from registering properly. It seems unlikely that higher gusts then 46 mph were recorded as the wind wasn't that strong during the period of the snowfall. The wind speeds became available again by 08:15 s the snow fell off the cups and thawed somewhat on the digital anemometer. This was the first time I noted that wet snow stopped accurate wind measurements. The 28th saw the snow reduce to 5cm as it thawed and compacted under it's own weight. More snow showers brought the snow back to 10cm on the 29th before mild weather removed the snow altogether overnight. Storm Arwen failed here to be a storm the rapid fall of snow was remarkable though the most of which probably fell well under three hours as rain had to turn to Snow and then settle on wet surfaces. The inconsistency of the naming of storm was shown on the 30th as winds broke the 50mph level for the first timer and only time of the year. However no name was given to the system. Despite the Snow and fun at the end of November Autumn was a mild season at 1.1C above normal while being a dry autumn with only 77% of the expected rainfall. December saw a couple records broken. The warmest days ever recorded on the 30th and 31st at 14C and also the warmest night at 12.6C.Despite this the month had average temperatures coming at 0.7C above average. This mainly being due to mild nights. The month had very little in the way of Snow with Snow falling only on two days the 6th and Christmas day so a rare white Christmas although I doubt anyone will remember it. It was the coldest day of the month with 2.7C being the high. The month actually started below average and the only the mild spell from the 11th to the 16th brought it back above average. Normally the high of 13C on the 12th would have been enough to be the warmest day of the month. However spring like weather from the 29th saw 13.2C being reached on the 29th to be outdone by the 30th and 31st with 14C So December combined spring and a little bit of winter into one month. Rainfall after a very wet start 15.2mm and 16.8mm on the 4th and 7th indicated a possibility of a very wet month. However a spell of drizzle foggy weather mid month made this look like it would be normal month. However a wet spell at the end of the month produced enough rain to push the total up to 111.2mm make sure Winter got of to wet a wet start in not a particularly wintry one. The year as a whole came in at 10.2C just 0.2c degrees above average. Rainfall was also average and the lack of any windy weather made it a quiet year overall. Only one gust above 50mph during the year.

Yearly Report 2021

The year again will mostly remembered for none weather events as Covid once again ravaged the country. January kicked the new year on a cold note and ended up one a rather cold month. Small amount of snow fell from the 2nd tot he 7th although it failed to settle. Although Snow didn't fall from the 8th to the 13th we had the niceties of freezing rain on the 12th luckily low amounts. A renewed cold spell from the 13th to the 15th produced the first lying Snow of the month with 10cm lying on the morning of the 15th. Milder conditions though meant that this was reduced to 7cm the next day and this was the last lying snow of the month. Temperatures crept into double figures on the 10th and 11th with 10.4C and 10.5C being recorded. The 20th saw a six degree drop in temperature in less than an hour as temperatures fell ahead of a cold front. The front brought widespread unforecast Snow to the west of the UK however the snow failed to lie for long in Sheffield and had gone by morning as the Snow turned back to rain. This was the result of Strom Cristoph which also brought 41.7mm of rain. 16.7mm on the 19th and 25mm on the 20th. Temperatures stayed cold until the 26th when they returned briefly above normal before turned cold again to close the month with snow falling again. Despite ten days of Snow falling the month only produced two days of lying Snow. The coldest day was the 24th when only 1.1C was reached while the coldest night was on the 31st when -3.3C was reached. January was the 5th wettest on record. Rainfall clocked in at 147.5mm of rain with 13.2mm, 17.6mm, 18.1mm falling on the 11th, 13th and 14th and large amounts again on the 19th and 20th when 16.7mm and 25mm fell. Heavy rain hadn't finished yet though with 19mm on the 27th followed by 11.1mm on the 28th. The month produced 13 air frosts although none of the nights were exceptionally cold. February was an average month temperature wise but yet another very wet one just missing out on the 100mm. The weather didn't feature much in the way of rainfall from the 7th after 64.2mm fell in the first 6days 68% of the monthly total. The rainfall amounts being 12.5mm, 15.6mm, 3.3mm, 5.3, 6.7mm and 20.8mm. The larger amounts of rain fell as Snow with 10cm falling on the 2nd this thawing to 6cm on the 3rd disappearing during the day. Snow didn't lie again until the 8th when the depth varied from 1cm to 3cm due to drifting. The 9th saw this increase to 5cm and finally to 6cm on the 10th. Snow stayed on the ground for the next four days finally disappearing on the 14th which was the last day that snow laid during February. The coldest days were on the 7th and 8th when 0.9C and 0.5C were the high and 12th and 13th which recorded 0.8C and 0.6C. The nights were also very cold during this period with -4C on the 10th and -6C on the 11th followed by the coldest night with - 6.6C on the 12th. _4C and -4.1C were recorded on the next two days. To cancel such a cold start out a dramatic change had to occur and sire enough spring arrived early on the 15th with temperatures in double figures bar two days. Despite such high temperatures the month 0.8C above average. The same rainfall was which came in at 69.3mm with 49.2mm falling in four days. The month generally seeing little in the way rain otherwise. April was a cold month with temperatures with temperatures 1.8C below normal. Snow fell on five days but didn't lie all. A very dry month as well the 2nd driest on record with 6.1mm falling. The wettest day was the 27th with just 2.4mm falling. The month produced an impressive 11th air frosts these being recorded on the 5th to the 8th and 12th to the 13th and 15tha d the 16th. Another two air frosts occurred on the 22nd and 23rd and the month finishing off on another 30th. The coldest night was on the 7th when -2.1C was the low and honourable mentions need to go to the -1.7C on the 12 and -1.9C on the 15th. The coldest day was the 6th with 6.2C while the warmest was the 18th with 18.1C. The day also featured an air frost when -0.9C was the low a 19C degree variation during the day.
